ABOUT DWO |
|
The Dalit Welfare Organisation (DWO), established in 1994 and registered in the office of District Administration in Kathmandu on 16 September 1994, is a member-based movement-oriented non government organisation (NGO) of Dalit activists and is one of the largest Dalit human rights NGOs in Nepal. DWO is working to eliminate caste based discrimination and untouchability in Nepal through two principle approaches: through media advocacy and through its development programme.
With a committed and experienced staff of more than 120 people, DWO has outstanding strength in:
- Rights Based Advocacy through lobbying, theatre and drama, interactions and community awareness raising.
- Media Advocacy through its own TV & Radio production and broadcast facilities.
- Formal & Informal Education
- Livelihood Development & Economic Empowerment
- Peace Promotion
- Project & Programme Implementation
DWO's vision is to achieve a justifiable society by eliminating caste based discrimination and untouchability. The organization works to achieve this by creating opportunities for Dalits to access all sectors and levels of government policy making and implementation so that the Dalit peoples can protect and promote their human rights and achieve economic, social, educational and political equality.
DWO is recognised as one of the major organizations working for the disadvantaged Dalit community empowerment and inclusion, access to education and livelihoods. Its primary target groups are women, children and the ultra poor and its programme stretches across all Nepal with active, funded programmes in 20 of Nepal's 75 districts and membership in 53.
